The music by Joby Talbot is the first full-length score 1 hour 40 minutes for the Royal Ballet in 20 years. The work is based on Lewis Carroll 's well-known children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Most major companies have repertories based on the great 19th-century romantic ballets and the dramatic midth-century story ballets, but newer, memorable full-length pieces have been nearly as rare as an actress winning an Oscar for portraying a feather-sprouting, homicidal ballerina. Wheeldon is a good choice, almost a poetic one. He has the training and inside knowledge of the story ballet form as honed here by Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan. And his lengthy exposure to the pure-dance works in the Balanchine and Robbins canon encouraged a physical freedom and dynamism that transcended his own traditions. And watching the ballet, a brilliantly theatrical, superbly designed by Bob Crowley extravaganza of color and costume, madcap action and fluent dance, you feel that Mr. Wheeldon is safely inside a structure that he knows and loves.
